As part of my push for increased transparency, I firmly believe that the village needs a long-term strategic plan. In the Village of Cottage Grove, half of the Village Board trustees are elected every year. While this brings fresh ideas, it can make it challenging to maintain consistent priorities. That’s why developing a long-term strategic plan that looks 10 years or more into the future is essential.
A strategic plan provides clear direction for both the Village Board and staff, ensuring alignment on major goals like infrastructure, public safety, housing, and economic development. It helps keep the village financially responsible and focused, even as board members change.
Equally important, the strategic planning process would actively involve residents, creating opportunities for the community to help shape priorities and ensure their voices are heard. This helps build trust and ensures the plan truly reflects the needs and values of Cottage Grove.
A long-term plan allows the village to identify and prepare for large projects well in advance, while remaining flexible enough to adapt as community needs evolve. Regular updates ensure it stays relevant and responsive.
With thoughtful, inclusive, and forward-looking planning, Cottage Grove can stay true to our values while building a strong, vibrant future.
